Yes, Dave. It only just occurred to me while typing our earlier exchanges that these confident "charismatic" girl role models were perhaps sowing some seeds for us - for those of us still being allotted an inferior role in life - inwardly always assumed to be second class citizens, outwardly having to wear skirts all the time! I've just finished Oxus In Summer and Bridget Hunterly actually fights a duel, with a boy, with riding whips yet, and wins!
Although there ARE moments when we see Nancy privately, not living up to her own high standards and expectations. Being sick in the English Channel in Peter Duck for one, and desperately trying to find water with the hazel twig in Pigeon Post. I wonder about AR's "relationship" to her. Evgenia is an enigmatic character to me, having read only Hugh Brogan and the autobiography - what kind of woman was she?
