And she did. Chapter VIII WD - the first thing which John did after losing the main anchor was to try to get the kedge down. There is even a large illustration of the kedge. The trouble was that they couldn't find a long enough rope for it.

Finally in ChapterXXVI with Jim back on board again he is able to tell them that the warp is in the stern locker.

Personally I would have thought that such a sensible owner would have kept the kedge and the warp closer together and possibly even attached permanently to each other. But that might have spoiled the story.

And as a matter of interest even today the kedge on the Nancy Blackett is rather inaccessible. Now that most people never stop anywhere except in Marinas anchoring of any boat is becoming quite a rare event. At least this allows people like me who don't like Marinas to find places in Secret Water which are still secret.
