If you don't mind the stories being transported across the pond, I highly recommend this series, written in 1948, 49, and 51 by Dean Marshall. There is no sailing, I'm afraid, but there are maps, and the independence and creative imaginations of the family of children -- coupled with adventure and minimal, sympathetic adult involvement -- makes these in the same class, in my thinking.
