Joe's account rings lots of bells.

Like when we were sailing across the Thames Estuary in the dark, bound as Jim Brading was for the Long Sand Head, and wondered what the funny scrunching sound was at the trough of each wave,

It was the Kentish Knock sand. And a few minutes later the mast fell down. Probably the nearest I have been yet to the gentleman with a beard and a scythe.

But I'm still here. And we sorted ourselves out and got home without help. I have certainly never been arrogant about navigation since. (as a matter of interest we had underestimated the tide)

I do believe we have all got so much in common and are so near to seeking the same thing that it is a pity to argue on this site.
