It was Ransome's personal tribute to Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL where a street boy exclaims "Walker!" to Scrooge on being ordered to go and buy the largest turkey in the shop ("What! The one as big as me?!"). "Walker" hears means "unbelievable" and was Ransome's way of indicating to his readers, long before the Case of the Altounyan Slippers, that he had made up the whole story and that it was fiction and Not Real.
