Laurence and Jon are right about where Swallow's halyard is made fast. However, I have to say that in Aileen Louisa (sprit-rigged, and shown above with her mainsail brailed up) the main halyard is indeed made fast on a pin at one end of the sailing thwart, while the jib halyard is similarly belayed at the other end -- the pair of halyards acting as shrouds exactly as David describes -- and these pseudo-shrouds don't interfere at all with the vessel's sailing qualities.

(In the photo the "starboard shroud" is quite obvious, although the "port shroud" doesn't appear as the jib has been handed and the halyard has therefore been slackened right away.)
