Thank you to Prue and PeterH. Prue, I assume that you must be close to AR's Literary Executors and I ponder about what their objective is. I would have thought that it should be to assure AR's stories retain a place in literary interest. Freezing the tales is unlikely to achieve that - life moves on. If they want to prevent anyone else from earning money from indirect association with AR's work - well, understandable but the labourer is worthy of her / his hire. The HUGE benefit of an up-to-date follow-on to S's A's and D's would be that the market for the originals would be greatly expanded. And so the executors and whatever legal whatsit exists would gain. Also AR's standing would be strengthened. Surely a good objective? So their stance doesn't make sense to me. Far better to allow a follow-on subject to oversight to ensure that the 'story line' is not diminished.
And, of course Peter you are quite right in what you say. A refreshing viewpoint. (So we're friends at last!) You are perfectly right about sensitivity about names (!) and language use. But it COULD be done - and so bring a whole new swathe of readers into the AR world we all enjoy and would wish to share.
Well, I have an uncomfortable feeling that this mail will not breach the walls of the Executors. But if I'm, sadly, right - that would be a shame. But thanks for your supportive view. Joe
