I have recently looked up the British AA website (click on 'other route options') to answer the Edinburgh/Inverness question in reverse — we leave for the UK on Saturday. The answer was a little under 4hrs.

When we were last in the UK (2001) it took us about 1:50 to drive Horning to Pin Mill (but this included getting lost in Norwich rather than bypassing the city). We then continued south and eventually ended up in Rye that night.

We were often told that a journey that we thought perfectly reasonable was 'too far to attempt in one day'. The only time we had a problem was driving around the south coast (Brighton etc) on a Sunday — very slow!

This time we will be in Scotland in the high season so I have booked all our accommodation in advance. I used the AA website to choose locations about 4hrs drive apart.
