I know that AR - like many of us - was into boats with sails. But if you want a visual feast, go to www.flemingyachts.com. And roam about.

Tony Fleming and I are old friends (but I can't afford his boats) and he's been designing and making motor cruisers with a lovely 'pure' line. Not a plastic toy - a real beauty with a classical line. If you want a visual treat - just look at what he does. I don't lust a lot, but, dear me, I'd LOVE one of those!!

Which moves on to sculling. As a lad I was taught to scull dinghys. And they all had a semi-circular shape notch cut into the stern to take the oar. But with the wide acceptance of outboards, I suppose, no-one sculls any more. I just realised this looking across a part of Poole Harbour and - no notches. Does anyone out there still scull?

Which reminds me of Yawls and Ketches. Yawls with the mizzen mast abaft the rudder post - and a smaller sail - and ketches with the mast before the rudder post - and a bigger sail. I only found out recently that a yawl is also called a Dandy. Is that an American usage? It's new to me. I also just realised that I don't see either any mnore despite the fact that they enable a smaller and easier set of sails, so less fraught if the weather turns.

What news or views, shipmates? Joe
