I was thinking of the "gloating Sub-Lieutenant" who came to take Commander Walker to London; perhaps he was an aide, not a driver (my memory of precise details is a little hazy). Or perhaps AR's knowledge of things nautical & piscatorial isn't matched by his knowledge of things naval. Amazing what we can read into his works when we try!
