I hope it was a thick rich fruitcake of the type the cook made for the Kanchenjunga trip in Swallowdale.
This type of cake does not crumble easily. Nancy may have even grabbed it from a cake-cooling tray in the larder, in which case it could well have still retained it's greaseproof paper.
However I remember when I was small and keen to go out, I did not wait for my mother to wrap sandwiches- which were stuffed into a pocket in my shorts. Cake, if provided, went into the breast pocket of my shirt again unwrapped. The universal apple again went into a shorts pocket.

There were problems if sandwiches contained tomato or pickle, as this tended to leak and stain clothing. I think my mother learned and most sandwiches were either cheese and onion or cheese and lettuce.
