Ed as you no doubt are aware biscuit in the UK is a cookie, As to English cakes if cooked correctly and I have made many including the
fabulous Christmas cake, should not turn out like rocks.
Usually the cake I make for everyday use would be a light fruit cake
which would not be too squashy so could I suppose be stuffed into a rucksack.
Of course whether AR had any specific cake in mind, or as I think it was just a description for the story whose young readers would not worry over in detail, as we seem to later in life.
I gave up making cakes on a regular basis, also no longer brew beer as the old waistline was starting to suffer from too much consumption.
