I think the suggestion of WREN drivers for naval personnel at the time of SW is not possible. The WRNS was formed late in 1917 and then demobilised in 1919. Apparently the possible re-formation was discussed by a Sub-Committee for Imperial Defence in 1936 but concluded that "Womens Reserve not deemed desirable"! But by 1938 the changing political situation had caused the Admiralty to think again and "was well ahead with plans for re-formation of the service". From this it can be seen that in 1932, the date of the story for SW, there would only have been male uniformed RN personnel.
