Sorry Lyn an assumption on my part, as any of us in the UK would know at once what sort of cake Nancy took; solid fruit cakes tend to be what people mean by a 'cake' (well in the 1930s and 40s and my childhood of the 50s). Anything else would be named - sponge cake for example.
