Thank you to Laurence, Deb and David for their help about Dandy's and sculling. I didn't know that Brittany still espoused it. I can't understand why it has fallen out of favour in Britain. It seems much simpler than rowing over short distances - between quay and boat. I'm off to France shortly and will clock Brittany and try my hand again.

I spent time with my son on his canal boat recently and watched, fascinated, as someone tried to row a boat through a space too narrow for the reach of the oars. But no notch - couldn't scull. I must go up there again and try it for size.

Thanks all - Joe
