In the 1970s a hermit lived in a tiny cottage built from rocks and rubbish at the bottom of Ballard Cliff at the North end of Swanage Bay. Everyone knew that he lived there and the authorities left him in peace. Then when the owner of the land died (Ralph Bankes the last of the Bankes family who owned Corfe Castle) the lawyers turfed hin out, because the National Trust, to whom the land had been bequeathed, wanted the land 'unencumbered'. Any comment from me would be superflous.
