From Oregon: We don't have bracken that I know of, although the US is quite large--perhaps it is elsewhere in the States. I remember that when reading that passage out of SD as a child, I also imagined something sort of deadish. Brown, at any rate. The description of the bracken that Roger hides behind in PP made me adjust my mind's picture to something bushy and alive. It was thrilling in a way that those of you in England probably can't envision to see real bracken when I visited the Lakes District the first time. We even took a photo of our youngest son playing at being Roger. The hiding part, not the sprain!
