I was recently re-reading John Berry’s very interesting 'Discovering Swallows & Ransomes' and was once again struck by his liking for the Clifford Webb drawings used in the first publication of SA & SD. Not only that but his courage in saying so to AR himself!
Growing up with the AR drawings these always seem the most appropriate and I could almost believe that they had done by the characters themselves! Webb’s on the other hand, the few I have seen at least, seemed over-stylised and almost as if he had never read the books or had little idea what they were about (I know this is not the case but just my impression).
To me the AR drawings are essential, and the Webb ones a mere curiosity. Any thoughts anyone?
