I think it is what you first see and are familiar with which becomes permanently imprinted upon one's perceptions. I find that I have a problem with any other illustrators of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Baum (there were at least two early illustrators of the Wizard of OZ series) A. A. Milne and others I can't think of at the moment. I see other illustrations for these stories and am usually very dissapointed. These others are invariably based upon the original, classic illustrations, but "slicker" and usually more stylized - and I am not really into "slick".

Personally, Mr. Ransome's illustrations (since they are consistant throughout the series) became The Standard for the visual aspects of the books. It is amazing, though, how Mr. Ransome hardly ever shows a face! He allows us to absorb the personality of the charactors through the text of the story. He does what he does best, portraying a sense of the event and place without any exteraneous detail!
