Why bump them all off? There are other winters besides the season of Winter Holiday that are still begging to be filled. Then, the idea of a parallel universe where they keep on having adventures is very appealing. Maybe they never grow old at all. And why not? After nearly 80 years they are still as fresh and young as they ever were. They never fought in the war, they never married and had children. Maybe they are waiting for someone to coax them back into more adventures. When I visited Coniston Water in 2003, I looked around and spotted any number of children the right age who might have been . . . well, you know what I mean. Every time I open the wellworn covers of SA or SW I am back with my lifelong friends. And thus it will it be until the day I die.
