While I agree with Peter that the books have been better than their films, I don't think that filming the completed books is a bad thing. I just found Coot Club and Big Six in the video collection of our local library (hadn't bought them because of mixed reviews on TarBoard), and watched them with my wife (who hasn't read any of the books). When we'd finished Big Six, she asked if there were any other S&A (etc.) videos besides the three we've seen and was disappointed when I had to tell her there weren't. I have hopes of leveraging that into getting her to read the books, though.
I must say, I'd be a little concerned about someone else trying to reach AR's standard of storytelling with only a bare outline of the plot; after all look at how much trouble they have with the entire book, including dialog!
