I think their grog was homemade lemonade, presumably not the fizzy kind as I knew as a kid.
So Rum and lemonade would be ok if somewhat sweet.
As to the weight 72 gallons would be quite a load to lift and carry.
Maybe it was not full as I would think it would take quite a time to consume 72 Gallons.
