I assume that the Amazon's 'puncheon' was some sort of jug or thermos container. (Did we have those in the '30's?) However, the mental picture of Nancy and Peggy trying to carrying a 72 gallon barrel strung on an oar is a good one. (Let's see- water weighs about 8.3 pounds/gallon x 72....)
