Yes it was certainly clogs (with irons) that came to my mind. I think I associate these with the industrial towns of Northern England because of the "clogging up the works" figure of speech, which I assume originated with the activities of the Luddites (and the similar acts of sabotage by French clog-wearers); but on reflection I suppose the materials and skills for clog making and the replacement of the irons were possibly more widespread in agricultural areas than in towns? I have heard of clogs without irons being worn relatively recently by workers in coal mines and munitions factories but don't know if anybody nowadays wears them shod with irons, excepting dancers in the North-West Clog Morris tradition.
