Don't try to get anywhere via the town of Windermere on a Saturday afternoon - all the holidaymakers are travelling in/out and the place is a bottleneck, with solid queues for about five miles to the south (people coming from the M6 motorway). If possible, time your arrival and departure to the Lakes during Monday - Thursday.
