Ransome family connection with Manchester : "I was born in Leeds, but the Ransomes are an East Anglian family (Quakers). Thomas Ransome, my grandfather, was the son of John Atkinson Ransome, who late in the eighteenth century left his brothers to discover ways of chilling steel and making plough shares and other agricultural instruments, and to found the Ipswich firm of Ransome and Rapier, while he went north to Manchester and became a surgeon celebrated in his day. His bust was to be seen over the Manchester Medical School of which he was one of the founders, and he was the surgeon brought from Manchester on the foot plate of an engine too late to save Huskinson (MP) after he had been run over at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway." - Autobiography.
