Cruise of the Great White Fleet. I have heard of this US 'showing the flag' expedition, But was intrigued to read that it was to demonstrate to Japan and that the Ausies were a bit concerned about Japan's growth prior to WWI. I remember from 'o' level History that GB signed a treaty with Japan in 1902 and they were in fact allies of ours and the empire. They fought on 'our' side in the 14-18 war, though as the Japanese had thrashed the Russians at Port Arthur in 1905, perhaps the aussies were slightly aprehensive of their rapidly developing and warlike neighbours.
It has also been forgotten since WWII, that US was not always best friends with GB and Europe. One of America's diplomatic aims durring WWII was to break up the established European empires, including our own, and to curb further expansionism. I suspect that the White fleet was to demonstrate as much to European powers, and GB, as to potential trouble makers in the Pacific. Naval rivlry was a major contributory factor in the run up to WWI.
