Oh Jock don't get me started on this one! I live nearby and replacing the 'gates' is the best news for motorists - we hope! Why - because it should bring proper traffic controls to the crossing area rather than the mini-roundabout that there is at the moment.
Currently the standard of driving in the area, and from retired residents in particular, is appalling. Many a time I have approached the gates to turn into Frinton only to have someone pull out in front of me without giving way in the correct manner. Opponents of the change claim that there has never been a fatal accident, this is due to luck and the ability of other drivers to take evasive action. The other argument being used is that the gates should have a preservation order put on them (remember we are talking about a pair of standard wooden level crossing gates!)
Still as the Guardian points out 'they' wont take any notice of flashing lights, they seem to imagine whatever is happening on the road they always have priority.
OK OK, as this has nothing whatsoever to do with AR I'll shut up!
