Hello Carla - welcome, and I don't think you are crazy for loving Swallows & Amazons. In fact, I think you are an incredibly valuable voice to have on Tarboard because you are today's generation, and you read the Ransome books as a child as recently as the 1990s.

People like me (getting on a bit) always wonder if children and young people today can relate in any way to the children in the Ransome books, with their quaint manners and speech and attitudes. When I see young people today (sorry for this hackneyed phrase, but I can't think of anything better) out and about enjoying themselves, they seem to me to be on a different planet from Nancy and John and Susan and Roger etc, let alone living in a completely different age.

May I ask if you can empathise in any way with Ransome's child characters? Despite their period speech ('Oh I say . .') and attitudes? Do they seem frightfully inhibited, compared with today's kids doing their own thing without any worries about parents and 'authority'?

If you can relate to AR's characters, this would be wonderful news - AR lives !!

(By the way - Tarboard is not the least bit 'intimidating' - don't be put off by that old nonsense!)
