I can get to Walton-on -Naze (for Secret Water) in 3 hours by train from my home station in East Berkshire. It takes longer by car by another 30 minutes.
If you have not already done so, it might be worth joining The Arthur Ransome Society (TARS) as there is more information available on the background to AR and his stories.
However any question you have will be answered after a fashion on TarBoard, don't be afraid to ask as we are all learning.
TarBoard is an adjunct to but not part of TARS.
