The September 2006 issue of the UK railway magazine carries a feature on Lowestoft in Steam Days.
You will remember that this is the station at which the Swallows arrived in PD. It was overlooked in David Carter's lovely book Arthur Ransome's Railways now unfortunately out of print.
This article may redress the situation partly.
There is a picture of the Central Station in the 1900's plus one or train pictures in the 1930's which give a flavour of what it might of been like for the S's on their journey.
Although many of the pictures are later, transport in the area did not change too much until the late 1950's. Those more familiar with the area can probably add more to this.
There is a bonus of a colour picture of a steam train crossing the Oulton Broad swing bridge.
