Thank you Peter, and I agree with your last thought.
Another factor I didn't mention (though it has arisen before) is that most of us came upon the books in childhood, and so are linked with a particular aspect of each of lives. What they mean to me will be very different to others - WH remains my favourite and the one I re-read the most. The meeting of the Ds and the S & As is particularly well written, and their later acceptance I identify with. But that's me and others will see their own favourites differently. Once you start speculating on 'what happened next' you began to chip away at what ever memory you have.
It's now over forty years since I first read S & A and the rest of the canon and my feelings about each book have hardly changed. What happened after GN - I don't want, and more importantly, don't need to know.
