I don't agree with Mike.

It seems to me rather that WD puts the Swallows squarely INTO their 'natural' environment.

In the earlier books they have been playing. Now John (in particular) but Susan to a considerable extent and even Titty and Roger to some degree are put in the position of using what they learned in games to cope with a real, potentially deadly, situation.

And they cope triumphally. That is why (apart from SW, a pastoral sequel) they effectively drop out of the saga. They have grown up and AR had no room to expand them further.
