Perhaps someone will one day have a go at telling us, but it will have to be someone who is as competent a story-teller as AR, and who understands AR's approach at a very deep level.

I've often thought to myself what would be involved in faithfully 'completing' Coots in the North. First of all, to ensure plot continuity and appropriate vocabulary and writing style, one would need to become really familiar with the SA canon. Perhaps, Ed's approach of typing it all in by hand would be the most effective. Secondly, one should read at least all of AR's mature writings, letters, diaries, notes, book introductions and other material to understand the ideas and passions that were important to him and shaped his creations. Thirdly, one should try to understand as much as possible of the social, economic, built and cultural environment that his characters inhabited. (Yes, I'm afraid it would mean having a basic knowledge of 1930's boarding schools, plumbing, railway timetables and a great many other things besides.) Truly, a lifetime's project. Are there any takers?

In case the above seems unduly negative. I do believe that sequels can sometimes be very good. I liked the Rebecca sequel. The link below also shows what can be done. It leads to some 'brand new' Sherlock Holmes stories. I particularly liked The Lady Downstairs.
