AR doesn't stress the fact but I am quite sure that John WAS terrified inside. But he had the knowledge to realise that nobody could possibly come and rescue them - no radio, and AR doesn't mention distress flares - so he did the best that he could and it was good enough.

I have on a couple of occasions been in similarly life threatening situations while sailing, and each time my brain went onto auto-pilot, my body developed unusual strength, and I did the right thing without even giving it analytical thought. And funnily enough without feeling terrified at the time, although thinking about it later was indeed terrifying.

Adrenalin does most remarkable things for you - and I feel sure that that was what carried John through.

To be really controversial, I do wonder whether Nancy would have coped so well!
