In the dim and distant past when I was told how to boil an egg I was told:
Either
place your egg in a pot of cold water, bring it to a boil, and (this is the tricky part -- when is it actually boiling?) starting your timer from the moment boiling is achieved, cook the egg for 3 minutes.

Or
place your egg in a pot of boiling water and leave it in for 5 minutes.

It seems to work in practise both ways but I have never climbed Kanchenjunga to see what difference altitude makes.
