Let no one say we don't try to help on TarBoard. A wartime recipe for bread sauce, to make John L feel really at home (it's from the Radiation Gas Cooker Cookery book, published around 1940, and which my mother used all her life):

Ingredients:

1 small onion, 2 cloves
one third teaspoonful salt
a dust of cayenne
half a pint milk
2 ozs. breadcrumbs
1 tablespoonful cream (optional)
one quarter teaspoonful pepper

Simmer the onion (stuck with the cloves) in the milk 15 minutes, strain the milk over the crumbs, add the cream (if used) and seasoning; re-heat, and serve with fowl, game etc.

(or even boiled eggs? :-)
