Remembered one of my reasons for thinking the Amazons didn't board!! (This one isn't very strong, so I'm guessing there are others) - Nancy and Peggy, alone of the Swallows and Amazons, had a few days each year at school when skating took the place of duller games (according to Winter Holiday). Obviously the Lakes isn't the only place where that would be possible, but one could conclude that the implication is that Nancy and Peggy schooled locally.
