I think it is unreasonable to discuss Ransome on TarBoard without reading all the books. There's only 12 of them. Damn well make the effort! And Laurence says:
Too many people - I am sure none of us on TarBoard - make statements about him which are quite simply not supported by the books themselves.
Alas, Laurence, 'some of us on Tarboard' have done just that.
