Another place that can give you a very good insight into life in AR's books is the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton, near Chichester. Fewer traffic jams too.
It has such delights as a charcoal burners' camp, a hand-cranked pump and even a timber carriage as used by Roger for his ride back to Swallowdale.
I took a group of ARC (Japan) members there some years ago, and they couldn't be prised away until the museum closed.
