There's been a terrific amount of good sense posted on Tarboard in the last few days, and this Tarboarder feels more cheerful about the Board than he has done for years. Thank you to Mike Dennis, Carla, Jock, and Rob Marshall, among others.

But I see the word 'acid' in all the headings, used pejoratively, I imagine. Well, the large family of acids is, apart from anything else, essential for human and animal life and survival, but to bring it back to AR, a combination of two powerful acids is the key factor in the closing chapters of 'Pigeon Post'. Where would the prospectors have been without Dick's misplaced faith in the aqua regia test?

For that matter, where would chips be without vinegar? So I'm happy to be associated with the acids. The alternative, I suppose, would be to be labelled 'alkaloid' - which reminds me of that which is caustic, or bleach. This eradicates all colour, hues, staining, blotches, character - everything. And it stinks. That figures.

Long live the acid TarBoard! ;-)
