Talking of dangerous books for boys, I have a copy of "The Boy Electrician" which was published originally in 1920, with my copy: "Sixth Edition, revised", printed in 1946. This book has a chapter on experiments with an Induction Coil, including making your own (completely unshielded) X-Ray generator and fluoroscope.
Quite a lot of the book is not too dangerous, but the X-Ray bit is highly dangerous !!!
I think it would have been the sort of book Dick would have revelled in.
