Claire & Jock - thank you. Claire: I think 'WOT' is a great idea, and I'm all in favour of it. I'll say no more for fear of sounding patronising, but go for it!!

Your post reminded me of a snag with the 'Tarboard Arms' analogy. Many women do not like to go into a bar alone. Please imagine, therefore, that the 'TA' is not in the least threatening to women. Female Tarboarders have confirmed this (I asked recently). I do acknowledge, though, that TarBoard is still mainly inhabited by males, but I hope this imbalance will change before too long.

One final PS on that group at the back of the bar having a very serious talk, possibly even 'highbrow'. We must remember that this is 'TarBoard', ie the 'Arthur Ransome Board', NOT the 'Swallows & Amazons Board'. It is therefore perfectly within-topic to discuss aspects of AR's life in general, as well as the Swallows books (I'm sure Jock will concur in this). Many aspects of AR's life were deadly serious, eg his Russian experiences, in which he witnessed killings. Any discussion of this will inevitably be 'heavyweight' or 'highbrow' - it cannot be otherwise. In any case, even the plots of the Swallows books can be examined with academic rigour. For example, Adam Quinan has written a superb analysis of the chemical principles used in 'Pigeon Post' (available on the Lit Pages, and also to be republished in the 2006 Mixed Moss). This could be labelled 'egghead', but in fact it is extremely enjoyable and fascinating in the way it explains what went wrong with Dick's theories. So please let us not look down on seriousness and academic knowledge.
