Yes, the 'Tarboard Arms' should be like our mentor's writing, where everyone can speak up and is equally involved, without the sexism so prevelant in lesser pubs and author's works.

And of course, those of us who grew up admiring Nancy and Daisy, wouldn't feel threatened anyway!

My favourite AR character is Nancy. She's a great leader, she get's things done and has a very 'robust' attitude to keeping within the rules. AR's writings have inspired many high achievers including Claire Francis and Dame Ellen MacArthur.

Reading between the lines of AR's writings, I'd say that he enjoyed the company of powerful and confident women and tried to encourage the development of the same through his writings. But this, of course, is only my personal conclusion and like all opinions may be freely (and enjoyably) debated on TarBoard.

On a personal note, I spend a lot of time in Poland working with the developing heritage railway movement. I enjoy telling them about the husband-and-wife team on one of the UK's heritage railways where the husband is the fireman and his partner is the driver. Once the expressions of disbelief die down, I then deliver my knockout blow. Poland's best railway museum is run by a woman! :-)
