I wouldn't be surprised if the JB scriptwriters had got this idea from reading PP in the first place! Have you noticed that postings of a scientific or technology nature get rather few responses in Tarboard?
Another "scientific" item (actually engineering): have you looked really closely at how Dick made the pigeons ring the bell in PP? I think that as its shown the wire with the scrap of lead, hanging down below the cork should have its curved section bending into the loft rather than towards the outside. The way its shown, the act of entering by a pigeon wouldn't actually close the electrical circuit.
