It always strikes me that lots of children's stories have perpetually glorious weather, with the occasional extreme event such as a flood or a storm. AR uses the weather an awful lot - he has to, of course, with sailing and therefore wind speed/direction being crucial to the plots. But for me it adds a great dollop of realism - he was there, he experienced such conditions and he wrote stories based on them.
