Adam, your school seems to have been a little on the early side. In my schooldays, the winter term began in the fourth week of September, and went on till near Christmas. The spring term started about a month later, mid-January till end March, somewhat dependent on the date of Easter. And the Summer term was from the beginning of May until the end of July. This was during the war and into the 1950s, and I expect the pattern was the same in the 30s.
So when AR sets a story at the end of the Summer holidays, his own description of SW, it will be mid-September.
These dates applied to boarding schools. Even then, state schools had shorter holidays.
