Laurence - I find your reference to Monica Edwards interesting because of many children's writers, I find her timeline of books to be fairly similar to AR's, certainly the development of character lines ie Wish for a Pony followed in short succession by Summer of the Great Secret. Most of the Punchbowl Farm stories are clearly linked(can't remember the sequence right this minute)and the thing about Edwards is that she references her character's ages in each book which certinly makes things easier.
I would be useless to ask which book of AR's to read first - I read whatever I could get as a child at the library, and still tend to pick up one at random. S&A is the most simple (in my opinion), a great way to set the scene for the future adventures, and WH the most complex with WDMTGTS as a very close contender. SW is one you have to keep your wits about you, checking the map carefully otherwise you miss bits, and PP is as dramatic as WDMTGTS but in a completely different manner.
