filmmakers are in a 'win win' situation

Yes, Andy, unfortunately they are. There is one way we can take revenge, albeit in a very minor way, and that is to form a 'Ransome Film Club' (perhaps associated with Jock's pub). What happens is that we show filmed adaptations of AR's books and we heckle them, continuously and loudly. Every obvious error is greeted with a huge cheer or groan, depending on our mood. Ronald Fraser is booed and shouted down every time he appears. It would be very satisfying. I know that because I once belonged to a railway film club (don't tell Jock or Owen) and we used to sit through excerpts taken from films which had train journeys in them. Every time the wrong engine appeared on the train (eg because it was a GW loco purporting to set off from Victoria to the coast) there were gales of laughter. The incidental music got the same treatment - a great ironical cheer went up every time Vivian Ellis's 'Coronation Scot' was played (every other film!)
