Jenny, about thirty years after I'd first read and loved the books, I finally saw the 70s film version of S&A (Virginia McKenna et al,) and it had me in tears -- all those places I'd read about and loved from the other side of the world I could at last finally see, not just have to go on imagining.

Of course, there are those who say that imagination is richer, and children's stories should really try to encourage kids to use it (which I think is essentially what you're saying, and is certainly a theory I subscribe to, depending on particular circumstances.) But in this case I knew that the places really existed, and for decades I had wanted to see how they really looked. Watching the film allowed me to.

As far as the later TV versions of Coot Club and The Big Six go (lumped together on one tape inexplicably called "Swallows and Amazons For Ever,") while the effect I've described wasn't so dramatic, it was still definitely there. I thought some of the characters weren't as well cast perhaps, that was all.

But in all cases the story-lines were followed well, the acting was at worst good and at best first-class, and the scenery was exactly as it should have been.

I can't see how you could go wrong by watching any of the films, and I think when you do you'll be annoyed with yourself for not having done so sooner.

By the way, I understand there was an earlier TV version of S&A which was pretty junky. I haven't seen it, but others here will no doubt be able to tell you about it.

Mike
